Sarah Farquhar

Chief Executive Officer

Sarah is a purpose-driven leader with over 30 years’ experience in international development, education, and organisational transformation. She works closely with ministries, funders, and partners to deliver impactful programmes at scale. Combining strategic leadership with practical execution, she builds inclusive cultures and aligns strategy, operations, and sustainable performance.

Tony McAleavy

Chief Education and Skills Officer

Having originally joined EDT in 2001 as Teaching and Learning Director, Tony now has corporate oversight of the educational impact of all EDT’s activities and our public domain research programme. Across his career, he brings over 45 years of experience in education development, and has worked extensively on school reform in many countries, particularly in the Middle East.

Lindsey Stevens

Director of Finance

Lindsey leads financial strategy, governance, and performance across the organisation’s UK and international operations. A Chartered Accountant with nearly 30 years’ experience, she brings expertise in finance leadership, commercial decision-making and risk management, supporting sustainable growth and organisational impact worldwide.

Dr Nicky Platt

Director of Global Programmes and Business Development

Nicky drives the effective delivery of our programmes across Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Asia, Brunei, and the UK, as well as overseeing business development. Nicky has over 25 years in education, leading materials development and teacher-training programmes globally.

Sabine Nguini

Director of Technical & Learning

Sabine drives technical excellence across EDT’s portfolio and strengthening learning and knowledge-sharing across countries. She brings together experience from diverse contexts to strengthen EDT’s approaches and methodologies, and champions the organisation’s evidence and insights externally to influence wider thinking and practice in education reform.

Steven Clifton

Director of Legal and Governance

Steven leads the organisation’s legal, governance, risk, compliance, and company secretarial functions. As General Counsel he provides strategic advice on commercial, regulatory and corporate matters to support the company’s operations and international activities, ensuring effective governance and organisational resilience.

Suzie Walker

Director of People

Suzie leads people strategy, organisational development, and culture at EDT. With extensive leadership experience, she has delivered complex transformation programmes, strengthened organisational capability and supported sustainable growth, helping to create high-performing, inclusive workplaces where colleagues and learners can thrive.

Alison Smith

Interim Director of Digital, Data and Technology

Alison leads the organisation’s digital strategy and shaping how technology is invested in and used across EDT. With over 25 years’ experience at the intersection of technology, delivery and organisational change, she helps EDT turn strategy into organisational capability, more effective services and sustainable impact.

Faith Nkala

Director Sub-Saharan Africa

Faith is a results-driven leader in international education and development with more than 20 years of experience in designing and implementing effective development strategies across diverse African contexts. She has a strong track record of collaborating with governments, INGOs, and funding bodies.

Shravan Sawant

Director Middle East and ASEAN

Shravan leads strategic growth, programme delivery, and partnerships across the Middle East and ASEAN, with over 20 years’ experience delivering large-scale education reform and skills programmes globally. He has a proven track record of delivering complex, high-impact programmes in partnership with governments and development organisations.

Dr Clare Buntic

Lead Adviser for System Strengthening

Clare is an education systems strengthening specialist with extensive international experience, particularly across sub-Saharan Africa. She works with governments and local partners to design, adapt, and scale reforms that improve learning and equity. Her expertise spans system diagnostics, catalytic technical assistance, institutional capacity, localisation and adaptive implementation.

Marion Smallbones

Lead Adviser: Innovation and Insights

Marion is responsible for leading organisational strategy and our education propositions to support sustainable growth and greater impact. She works across the organisation to identify emerging opportunities and develop growth priorities. Marion has over 30 years’ international experience in education, spanning product strategy, innovation and research.

James Douglas

CEO at CfBT Brunei

James is CEO of CfBT, EDT’s Brunei company co-owned with local partners. He heads an international team working with the Ministry of Education to support teacher development and student outcomes across Brunei’s bilingual system. He has extensive experience leading education businesses and projects across multiple countries to deliver sustainable impact for learners.

Kathryn Cheary

Head of People International

Kathryn has responsibility across Sub-Saharan Africa, MENA and South-East Asia. With 25+ years People and talent management experience, she supports organisational growth, workforce planning and leadership development. With a focus on culture and collaborative working, she enables teams to deliver impact across regions.

Marisa Sefton

Head of Safeguarding, Duty of Care & Operational Risk

Marisa oversees governance, compliance, wellbeing, property, security, and incident response. She strengthens survivor-centred safeguarding practice, assures leaders and trustees, and translates complex risks into clear, proportionate action across UK and international education programmes and wider organisational operations effectively.

Rachael Fitzpatrick

Head of Research

Rachael Fitzpatrick leads research, evaluation and evidence synthesis across UK and international education programmes. She is responsible for research quality, strategic learning and impact, bringing extensive experience in education policy, equity and inclusion, workforce development, system reform, and evidence-informed decision-making.

Sarah Collinge

Head of People UK

Sarah works closely with EDT’s strategic leadership team to deliver people solutions that support organisational performance, employee engagement, and sustainable business growth. Sarah is a Chartered Member of the CIPD and has extensive professional experience in aligning the business and people agendas.

Sarah-Beth Hammerton

Head of Brand, Marketing and Communications

Sarah-Beth leads EDT’s brand, communications, and marketing strategy, shaping how we present our organisation, engage audiences, and deliver growth. With extensive experience in education and professional services, she works closely with our Executive Team and senior leaders to deliver outputs that support long-term impact.

Stephanie Jones

Head of Business Development

Steph is responsible for realising new opportunities globally. She has a master’s degree in Human Rights and Humanitarian Action from SciencesPo and a background in education programme management, followed by 8 years’ experience working across business development and strategy for education sector organisations.

Clare Tuckley

Financial Controller

Clare leads financial accounting, transactional finance, tax, and financial control, with overall responsibility for the organisation’s ERP system. She provides expertise in financial governance, risk management, and assurance, strengthening financial resilience and supporting EDT’s UK and international operations.

Anne Tutt

Chair of Trustees

Anne is a Chartered Accountant (FCA) with 30+ years of board-level experience across the private, public, charitable and NHS sectors. She now holds a portfolio of non-executive roles specialising in governance, audit, risk and strategy, and serves as Treasurer or Trustee for several leading educational, health and charitable organisations.

Tanya Barron

Vice Chair of Trustees

Tanya began her career in education before leading international development and children’s charities, including VSO, Home-Start International, Leonard Cheshire Disability and Plan International UK. An award-winning humanitarian, she received an OBE in 2016 for her contribution to expanding safe education opportunities for girls worldwide.

Sara Hodson

President

Sara has played a longstanding leadership role with Education Development Trust, serving as Trustee, Vice Chair and now Vice President. She brings expertise in governance, leadership development, succession planning and senior recruitment, alongside non-executive experience in higher education, healthcare and faith-based organisations.

Jonathan Simons

Trustee

Jonathan is a leading education policy adviser and Head of Education at Public First, with two decades’ experience across government, think tanks and the charity sector. A respected commentator on education policy, he also serves on the boards and advisory groups of several prominent education organisations.

Joy Hutcheon

Trustee

Joy is a senior international development leader who served on the UK Department for International Development’s Board from 2011 to 2018, overseeing global country programmes and corporate performance. Her career spans leadership roles across Africa and Asia, and she was awarded a CB in 2017 for services to international development.

Muchemi Wambugu

Trustee

Muchemi is a technology and digital transformation leader with more than 20 years’ experience across government, development and the private sector. He has led major digital inclusion initiatives in Africa, chairs EDT’s Technology Steering Committee, and brings expertise in innovation, strategy, governance, financial oversight and risk management.

Nimal Hemelge

Trustee

Nimal is a senior global operations leader with more than 20 years’ experience driving transformation across legal, commercial and delivery functions. He currently leads Generative AI and automation initiatives, oversees operational excellence on major infrastructure contracts, and serves as an Accredited Assessor for the UK Government Commercial Function.
