AI in education

Harnessing artificial intelligence responsibly to expand opportunity, improve learning, and strengthen systems

AI is changing the way education systems operate. It has enormous potential to strengthen education – but only when it is applied thoughtfully.

At EDT, we focus on approaches that are grounded in evidence, and improve outcomes for learners, teachers, and education systems. As the evidence base continues to grow, we are investing in areas where AI can make the greatest difference while maintaining strong governance and a clear focus on educational impact.

We are exploring how AI can strengthen educational impact across our priority areas, augmenting human capability while embodying principles of inclusion and equity.

Teacher and leader development

AI can enhance professional development through coaching, mentoring, and personalised learning support. We are particularly interested in approaches that help reduce teacher workload, support reflective practice, and build AI literacy among educators, while ensuring that technology complements rather than replaces human expertise.

Data, insights, and decision-making

AI has the potential to transform how education data is analysed and used. We are exploring applications such as predictive modelling, accelerated insight, and advanced data analysis to support inspections, programme improvement, and evidence-informed decision-making for governments and education leaders.

Learner support and tutoring

AI can create new opportunities to provide personalised support for learners, particularly in contexts where access to high-quality educational assistance is limited. We are exploring how technology can complement the work of teachers and provide targeted support that helps learners stay engaged and make progress.

We focus our attention where AI can make the greatest difference.

We are continually reviewing the emerging global evidence on AI in education and are well positioned to learn from academia, policymakers, industry leaders, and our own research to inform our work. This is helping us identify where investment, innovation, and capability-building can deliver the strongest outcomes for learners, educators, and education systems.

Our vision

We see AI not as a replacement for teachers, leaders, or educational expertise, but as a tool that, when used responsibly, can help strengthen educational quality, improve efficiency, and expand opportunity for learners around the world.

Using AI at EDT

Across EDT, staff are upskilled in AI for efficiency and impact through ongoing learning, collaboration, and professional development. This ensures that our teams can engage critically with new technologies and support partners to make informed decisions about their use.
