Skills Bootcamps in Early Years: Our Stories

Vicky's story: gaining the skills and experience needed for a new career

Vicky was referred to Skills Bootcamps in Early Years by her Job Centre Work Coach. She was new to the early years sector but had long-term goals of completing a qualification and then securing work in an early years setting.

“It is a fantastic opportunity. All the tutors offer incredible support and you also get the support of other learners. I have made friendships through this too.”

During the Skills Bootcamp

Vicky started the Bootcamp and enjoyed the learning sessions led by Gemma the tutor, particularly hearing the experiences from other learners in the group setting.

Vicky said that Gemma “always went the extra mile to help me and provide support in professional discussion”.

As part of the course, learners’ are also supported by Development Coaches whose role it is to prepare learners for finding work after finishing - Vicky’s coach was Julia. Julia supported Vicky to update and tailor her CV, preparing her for the next steps after the course.

After the Skills Bootcamp & next steps

After completing the course, Vicky secured an apprenticeship in the setting she had completed her work placement in. She has made a really positive start to her apprenticeship, with her employer saying she has blended straight in with the wider team.

Vicky now has the long-term goal of completing her apprenticeship and eventually becoming a room leader.
