Hani's story: Her journey back to work with our support

Hani, from West Yorkshire, went on a Pathways to Progress journey back to work, supported by our caseworker Sarah. She is now a Specialist Notetaker, supporting students with additional physical needs.

Hani's goals

Hani was a graduate mature international student with a background in teaching and had been out of work for a while when she came across our programme. She had worked with our employment key worker Sarah, who helped with understanding Hani's current employment aspirations and identifying relevant roles.

Within a week of her first online meeting with Sarah, she secured a job in a role she has not heard of before. She is now working as a Specialist Notetaker, supporting students with additional physical needs.

Read Hani's recollection of her time on Pathways and the support she received to find employment.

"From the very start of our consultation, I instantly felt the warmth and genuine concern from my caseworker Sarah Kernick. To this day, it genuinely feels like she is invested in getting me and her clients back into employment. Although we have a shared background in teaching, Sarah still took the time to understand what were my current employment aspirations, physical limitations and what would be suitable roles to look at.  Every session felt like a safe space to share worries and explore possibilities. Sarah gave me a variety of possible job titles to consider within education and outside of it.

My online meetings with her usually concluded with a set list of things to do and people to get in touch with, followed by very fruitful follow ups and responses. Sarah’s suggestions of things to do were manageable, insightful and apt. Within a week of our first online meeting, I had discovered and secured employment for myself in a role I had not heard of before.

Sarah actively listened and understood my parameters for work and suggested a very fitting route which perfectly matched my aspirations. Having her as my employment key worker has been such a blessing and a tremendous help in 2024. My only regret is not getting on to this programme sooner - taking the career test and completing the Pathways star has helped me to realise what are the areas in my life/work which are strengths and where there are weaknesses. As an international postgraduate mature student, taking time to complete these tests helped put my life into better perspective during a very tumultuous time.

I believe I wouldn’t be in my current situation where I feel much more secure and more confident had it not been for the support from Sarah Kernick and the Pathway to Progress programme. Thank you very much for this amazing effort. May the efforts of everyone in the EDT team be rewarded and you can continue to provide the amazing help you do for the community.

Signing off with the greatest of thanks,

Hani"
