EDT provides technical assistance through SCALE programme, to improve foundational learning outcomes

We are delighted to announce that EDT is contributing to FCDO’s Scaling Access and Learning in Education (SCALE) programme, which aims to improve foundational learning outcomes around the world.

SCALE is a four-year, £68 million programme that will run for a three-year period between 2024 and 2026. Its objective is to support FCDO offices in low- and middle-income countries to adapt and test education interventions, to get them ready for scaling. Alongside a number of other organisations lined up to contribute to SCALE’s success, EDT’s role is to work with FCDO to provide technical assistance to education officials overseas.

Our goal is to ensure that education stakeholders have access to the best available national, regional and global evidence on how to help children learn, within their own contexts and systems. We will support them to develop a shared understanding of the root causes of major challenges in foundational learning, and set evidence-based priorities for addressing them. We will also help education officials to develop and implement solutions.

EDT has developed a wide range of technical assistance services to offer through SCALE, in line with our areas of expertise and framework for systems strengthening. This includes scoping and diagnostic studies, supporting the design and implementation of government reforms, and co-creating interventions.

The technical assistance provided by EDT will be available to all FCDO offices in countries eligible for official development assistance. We will work in close collaboration with FCDO’s central SCALE team, ministries of education, external organisations, and local consultants who can provide specific technical and contextual knowledge.

The SCALE programme supports the wider UK-led G7 objective of speeding up global progress in enrolling millions more disadvantaged children, especially girls, in schools and other learning environments. As we deliver technical assistance through the SCALE programme, we will capture key learnings along the way and incorporate them into our evidence base – supporting global efforts to strengthen education systems and transform lives in the future.
